Cast Drawing and Bargue Drawing

The significance of cast drawing to the development of a classical artist cannot be overstated. Considered by many to be the most essential foundational aspect of studio training, cast drawing is crucial for mastering value (tone), proportion, and structure. Unlike a live model, a plaster cast is stationary and provides a uniform, white surface that simplifies value relationships, allowing students to focus solely on light and shadow divisions, planar relationships, and proportional accuracy. Along with Bargue drawings, cast drawing trains the student’s eye to see with accuracy, clarity, and sensitivity and helps develop structural knowledge. It also provides an opportunity for achieving technical mastery.
